Lyvia Turpin is a painter and printmaker born and raised in Drexel, NC. She moved to New
York in 2021 to pursue higher education and broaden her horizons. In 2025, she graduated
from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts Printmaking and a minor in History
of Art. She has since moved back home, as distance does in fact make the heart grow fonder,
and she is passionate about finding and creating community right here in Burke County.
Her work utilizes the materiality of propaganda and the disseminable characteristics of
printmaking to express visibility of various identities in the South and Appalachia. Her prints,
buttons, and zines address this using local imagery and clippings from Southern magazines
alongside historical symbols and references. Appreciation for the natural scenery of her home is
woven throughout her work, alongside a fascination with light, color, and layering, allowed by
her use of watercolor, transparent inks, and collage.
