The Catawba Valley Heritage Alliance
–ANNOUNCEMENT–
The Catawba Valley Heritage Alliance is seeking local potters in the Burke County & Foothills region to produce commemorative pieces of pottery in the tradition of the Catawba Valley Style. These pieces will be given away as the Grand Prizes for the paddling competition at the 7th Annual Catawba RiverFest to be held on September 18th at the new Lake James State Park.
Requirements: The piece should be at least 12″ high, made from locally sourced clay and be in a form or style which represents the traditional Catawba Valley Valley style of pottery which was produced in the region from the mid-nineteenth century up through the 1950’s and has been recently revived by a new generation of artisans who value the style for its originality, function and tradition. The vessels can be, but are not limited to, jugs, crocks or pitchers. For this special event the sponsor requires that a water & mountain scene be engraved, etched or glazed into or on the clay body and the the bottom of the vessel say “Catawba RiverFest ‘10″ in addition to the artist signature. The sponsor (Catawba Valley Heritage Alliance) will pay four artists $50 for each for the four pieces.

You may have created the pieces, bought them in a weak moment, or received them from a dear friend, but now they don’t fit your house, your life, or your taste. Think of it as re-gifting without embarrassment (and an opportunity to help your local arts organization raise funds). The Alliance will take care of EVERYTHING for you, and you can shop around for something new. You can set the price (or we will help). A commission of 1/3 the sale price will be donated to the Alliance. Non-members can participate for a commission rate of 40%. Blue Ridge Heritage Days in Blowing Rock is currently seeking vendors for a Main Street Festival, Saturday, September 18, 2010. This festival is being developed in celebration of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary. We are particularly interested in crafts and other products, including foods, which reflect the history and heritage of the Blue Ridge Mountains or which are produced locally. Space is limited and vendors must apply and submit photos and detailed description of their product or art. For more information, please call the Blowing Rock Chamber at 828-295-7851.
Please note that food vendors who sell food which is intended to be consumed at the festival (such as funnel cakes, sandwiches, drinks and other foods) will be considered seperately. Carolina’s Got Art! announces its 2010 juried exhibition to be held Friday, Oct. 1, through Saturday, Oct. 30. Original paintings of any media, drawings, monoprints or other one-of-a-kind prints, photography, free-standing sculpture, hand-turned wood or pottery/porcelain all completed within the past two years are eligible.

3. Exposure (Carolinas): We hope to add a traveling show through 2011, which provides much broader exposure and more opportunities to sell work

2010 Linda Flowers Literary Award:
North Carolina Humanities Council Calls for Submissions
GREENSBORO, NC (June 8, 2010) – The North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, invites original entries of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry for the 2010 Linda Flowers Literary Award.
The postmark deadline for submissions is August 15, 2010.
The Linda Flowers Literary Award is given annually by the North Carolina Humanities Council for unpublished writing that portrays North Carolina, its people, and cultures. While authors do not have to be North Carolinians, entries are expected to draw on North Carolina connections and/or memories.
The North Carolina Humanities Council will award the author of the winning entry a cash prize of $500, publication in the Humanities Council’s biannual magazine North Carolina Conversations, and support towards a writer’s residency at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities.
There is no entry fee. Entries should be no longer than 2,500 words and five copies of an entry should be submitted. For a complete description and full submission guidelines for the Linda Flowers Literary Award, visit the North Carolina Humanities Council website at www.nchumanities.org.

Two Requests for Artist Qualifications from the N.C. Arts Council
The North Carolina Arts Council seeks to commission artists for two park-sited public art projects, each of which will become a centerpiece of cultural tourism trails celebrating the state’s rich history, creative heritage, and contemporary artistic practices.
The first public art project is for North Carolina’s African American Music Trail at
All-America City Park in Kinston. The second is for North Carolina’s Historic Happy Valley Byway on the Yadkin River Greenway Trail in Patterson.
Applicant artists must be U.S. citizens or legal residents aged 18 years or older. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but they must submit two separate application packages.

The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County is accepting applications for the Regional Artist Project Grant. The grant provides up to $1,500 in financial support to committed, individual artists and small, unincorporated groups of collaborating artists. The grant is designed to award projects that will advance the applicant’s career and is open to emerging and established artists in Franklin, Johnston, Vance, Warren and Wake counties.

Visual Overture Magazine, a quarterly exhibition-in-print publication, is now accepting entries for the “Featured Emerging Artists” section to be presented in the winter 2010 issue. Seven artists will be selected for feature in publication. Artists are presented on two pages of the magazine and receive three complimentary copies of the issue in which they are featured. Accepted genres include sculpture, metals, textiles, photography, mixed media, painting, drawing, video art, digital art, printmaking and installation.

Visual Overture Magazine is accepting submissions for a special section of the magazine entitled “Spotlight on Video Art,” to be included in the winter 2010 issue. The section will feature the work of one serious emerging videographer whose work is fine art. Artists should submit two to three videos and a 500-word essay describing why the work can be classified as fine art.

The New Voices Award is given to a children’s picture book manuscript by a writer of color. The award winner receives a cash grant of $1,000 and a standard publication grant, which includes basic advance and royalties for a first-time author. The Writer’s Center is accepting submissions for the spring 2011 Emerging Writer Fellowships in the following genres: fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Emerging Writer Fellows will be featured at The Writer’s Center as part of their Emerging Writers Reading Series.The Writer’s Center bookstore will sell titles by the Emerging Writers throughout the season in which they appear in an effort to promote them and their work to a wide audience. Fellows receive an all-inclusive honorarium to help offset their travel costs, depending on their place of departure.

2010 Paul C. Rhyne Art Competition
October 5-November 5, 2010
Open to all area artists, this competition showcases a mixture of original works of art from all mediums. This is an annual regional exhibition, which was renamed in 2007 in honor and memory of Paul C. Rhyne, a life long resident of Lincolnton and supporter of the Arts Council. Work will be displayed at the Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton. Sponsored by the Arts ouncil of Lincoln County and in part by a grant provided by the Grassroots Art Program of the North Carolina Arts Council.

Each artist will be allowed to enter two pieces of work and should bring a brief resume and description of each piece. Entry fee for the show is $35 and entitles the artist to enter two pieces of work. All work should be delivered to the Lincoln Cultural Center gallery on October 7, 8 & 9, from 11am – 3pm, or call 704-732-9044 for special arrangements.
The show will run October 5 – November 5, 2010. There will be an awards presentation and opening reception for artist and the public on Friday, October 8, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Lincoln Cultural Center.
Rules for competition are as follows: Adults 18 years or older may submit two original works of art in any medium not exhibited at any previous Arts Council of Lincoln County exhibit. No prints or copies will be accepted. All paintings must be framed and ready for hanging. No saw-toothed hangers are allowed. The size of the artwork may be no less than 12 inches or no greater than 60 inches on any one side. Accommodations are available to exhibit three-dimensional art. Due to space limitations, pieces cannot be smaller than 3 inches or greater than three-foot in dimensions. All art must be hand delivered and picked up. The Arts Council of Lincoln County reserves the right to refuse any work that is not compliant with the rules or is deemed inappropriate for display in a public building. Although all reasonable care will be given to all pieces entered, all entries are submitted at artist risk of loss or damage.
All work may be for sale, but any work sold must remain on exhibit until the end of the show. The Arts Council of Lincoln County will retain a 30% commission for all work sold. All pieces may be picked up November 9,10 & 11 between the hours of 11am – 3pm. Arrangements may be made to pick up pieces later at Rising Sun Pottery if needed.
