Vega Metals to Develop Art for Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center
Vega Metals, comprised of the artist-team of Neal Carlton and Francis Vega, has been selected to develop public art tor Raleigh’s new Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center. Two hundred and sixteen (216) artists from around the country applied to participate!
Winners of numerous awards, Vega Metals, located in Durham, have created gates, fences, sculptures and architectural metalwork for sites including Duke University (Sports Hall of Fame and Duke University Gardens), the Liberty Arts Pavilion in Durham, and most recently the 24-foot high water fountain sculpture for the Gateway Gardens in Greensboro (see photo).
Working with architect Roger Spears (Szostak Design), the artists will develop artwork to fulfill the Public Art & Design Board site goals. These include the creation of art that encourages visitors to reflect on the natural beauty of the park and enhances visitor experiences of the facility.
This is the first project authorized by the Half Percent for Art ordinance established by the Raleigh City Council in 2009 and implemented by Raleigh’s Public Art and Design Board and the Raleigh Arts Commission. The new swimming center is scheduled to open in late summer of next year.
Gallucci’s Immigrant Gate II Installed at Millbrook Exchange Park
On Wednesday, May 12, Jim Gallucci’s sculpture, “Immigrant Gate II” was installed in its new home at Millbrook Exchange Park. About 12 feet high, 10 feet long and 4 feet wide, the powder-coated steel sculpture is part of a series of gates created by Gallucci.
“This gate was designed in remembrance of my family coming to America, as Italian immigrants, in the 1930s,” he said. “America represented new challenges and a better future for their family. The design embodies the American ideal with the stars and waving stripes, and the symbolism is instantly recognizable to anyone in the world.”
First shown at Pier Walk in Chicago in 1997, “Immigrant Gate II” came to Raleigh as part of the 2003-2004 Downtown Raleigh Sculpture Expo and was subsequently purchased by the Arts Commission for the City’s permanent art collection. The sculpture was moved from its most recent location across the street from the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts downtown due to the opening of the Raleigh Convention Center.
An official unveiling celebration will take place this summer after a new sidewalk approaching the sculpture is completed (date to be announced).

July 2010: Three Docs And A Flock Exhibit
The exhibit runs from Tuesday, July 13th until August 7th
. Reception: Thursday, July 15th, at 4:00 pm
The Three “Doctors of Art” of annual exhibiting fame are being joined this year by “A Flock”, Amy Cooke of Boone and Barbara Timberman. For the past several years, the Doctors of Art have exhibited and painted together in the Art Loft at Grandfather Golf and Country Club. This year an addition in the form of Amy’s bird photographs, Barbara’s paintings of Amy’s birds and Amy’s own interpretation of what she sees in her back yard will expand the exhibit.
The reception will feature the music of Ottava Rima and the bird theme will continue. Ottava Rima, a recorder and harpsichord consort, features Karl Doege, Tricia Hall and Amy Cooke playing many different recorders including great bass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, sopranino and garklein, with ASU Professor Emeritus and concert pianist Allen Kindt on the harpsichord. Ottava Rima will play their usual baroque and folk music, plus some special bird pieces for this event including Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Major, The Goldfinch, and William Williams’ Sonata in Imitation of Birds.
The Three Docs have varied painting styles. Dr. Burnam paints many scenes from travels in Europe to travels into his flower garden; Giverney to the back yard. His style is highly expressive with intense color, thick paint and expressive line and shape. Dr. Olsen is a realist, taking his own photographs and then using his interpretive skills to change color or by omitting some objects which would detract from the overall image. Dr. Littlejohn loves to paint on location so his work has a fresh, spontaneous look with the understated look of watercolor, which is actually the essence of an image.
All are invited to view this unusual exhibit and enjoy the music of Ottava Rima, while munching on goodies. The reception will be in the Dickson Gallery at Cannon Hospital and will begin at 4:pm on Thursday, July, 15. We hope to see you there!
